What is RAD? |

|
RAD (Rapid Application Development) developed during the mid 1980’s together with the revolution in PC technology and development tools which created the ability to work in different ways. Many techniques have been developed to facilitate rapid development including the use of workshops, timeboxing and Joint Application Development (JAD) sessions with business people. These techniques have been developed by many people over the years - many of whom are nameless pioneers. However RAD has suffered from a lack of good quality as it has been so difficult to control. Yes it is dynamic but it has also proven to be difficult to manage. Because of the difficulty in controlling RAD and the tendency for some software developers to adopt it as an excuse for hacking, RAD has suffered from a chequered history. In 1995 a group of like-minded companies formed a non-profit making organisation to develop a good quality RAD framework that would transform the application of RAD into a disciplined approach to software development. That group of companies was the DSDM Consortium of which CBS was a leading member together with British Airways, BT, IBM and other companies, both large and small. It is important to note that RAD is really about changing the way that people work to deliver solutions. Many people make the mistake of believing that RAD is all about using advanced software tools."A fool with a tool is still a fool."Tools matter but less so than the way we work. |

What is DSDM? |

DSDM is really a high level framework of proven RAD techniques and management controls that work to dramatically increase the chances of success for RAD projects. Therein lies its greatest strength and also its greatest weakness. People like the high level framework because it is relatively easy to tailor for their own needs. However many people have problems when it comes to applying the method on a daily basis for the first time because of the lack of detailed guidance. It is a bit like rocket science. The scientists do not know why everyone is so nervous (it is obviously safe in their hands) wheras mere mortals shudder with apprehension. |
